In 1085, Madrid was under Moorish rule. As King Alfonso VI’s troops prepared to retake the city, a Spanish soldier scaled the city wall alone. He swiftly replaced the Moorish flag with a Christian one, earning him the nickname Gato (cat), which then became a moniker for all Madrid inhabitants.
