EXTRA – Portuguese Delicacies and Coffee Pairings
When it comes to coffee culture, Porto has a lot to offer. But what better way to enjoy a cup of coffee than pairing it with some delicious Portuguese delicacies? In this section, I will highlight two popular delicacies – Pastel de Nata and Francesinha – and suggest the best coffee pairings for each.
Pastel de Nata
Pastel de Nata, also known as Portuguese custard tarts, are a must-try when in Porto. These sweet and creamy pastries are made with a flaky pastry shell and filled with a rich custard filling. They are usually served warm and sprinkled with cinnamon on top.
To complement the sweet and creamy flavor of Pastel de Nata, I recommend pairing it with a strong and bold coffee. A shot of espresso or a cup of Portuguese coffee, would be a perfect match. The bitterness of the coffee will balance the sweetness of the pastry, creating a perfect harmony of flavors. Extra tip, if you enjoy Port Wine, a nice ruby or tawny (Do recommend the Tawny for the contrast), will also blend very well with that Pastel de Nata.
Francesinha
Francesinha is a popular sandwich from Porto, made with bread, ham, linguiça, fresh sausage, and steak, covered with melted cheese and a spicy tomato sauce. This hearty sandwich is a comfort food for many locals and tourists alike, but be aware, this is big heavy meal in some restaurants, so eat if you dare, have a Rennie if you care. Check here for the “10 Best Francesinhas in Porto“, also including a great vegetarian Francesinha.
To complement the rich and savory flavor of Francesinha, I recommend pairing it with a smooth and velvety coffee. A latte or a cappuccino would be a perfect match. The milk in the coffee will balance the spiciness of the tomato sauce, creating a perfect blend of flavors. If Coffee, milk and sandwiches mixed are not your thing, go the Portuguese way and paired with a nice tap beer (Ask for a Fino or Tulipa).
In conclusion, Porto is not only famous for its coffee culture but also for its delicious pastries and sandwiches. When in Porto, make sure to try Pastel de Nata and Francesinha and pair them with the recommended coffee for a perfect culinary experience.
